The Royal Palace of Caserta enters the World Digital Library.

The World Digital Library of Washington is a multilingual and multicultural world digital library, projected and managed, with Unesco patronage, by the Library of Congress.
Among 1500 round manuscripts, letters, maps, prints, newspapers, rare books, documents, videos, audio tracks, illustrations and images from different Italian libraries, digital objects with high resolution, are now available thanks to an agreement protocol with the Ministry of Cultural Heritage. Cultural treasures, artistic and folkloristic expressions preserved in the libraries from all over the world, are provided for everyone on the website wdl.org.
The initiative, started in 2005 by the director of the Library of Congress, James H. Billington, has seen the adhesion of cultural institutions and libraries of every part of the world and today the website counts on various collaborations. The big library makes freely available the great literary and cultural treasures preserved by world institutions.
The aim is the construction, with the support of Unesco network, of a net which should be able to cover gradually the whole world and to develop in order to guarantee the widest representativeness. Institutions, foundations and private citizens also contribute to the project sharing technologies and know-how.
The website offers informative contents and research functionalities in six official languages: English, Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish and also Portuguese. It is possible to search materials under typology, historical period, geographical area, subject and institution.
One of the most distinctive feature is the high quality of digital resources which allows the enlargement of particulars and the vision of physical characteristics of the artifact. Exhaustive descriptions, edited by the administrators of the collections, offer an even deeper interpretation of the documents, connected to the responsible institutions and web services.
Initially Italy joined the project with the participation of the Central National Library of Firenze, the University Library of Naples, Sassari and Padua. The digital contents are related to manuscripts, ancient books and prints of great value, among them also some works of Galileo, the drawings of the Royal Palace together with the Vanvitelli's projects, the Nautical chart of the Mediterranean basin dated back to XV century.
The World Digital Library's mission is based on the collaboration among different countries, in particular with emergent countries, as promotion of intercultural dialogue, increase of the cultural content's variety and quantity on the web in order to provide resources for scholars, educators and citizens all over the world.
